VUPPC Launches 36-Hour Hunger Strike to Press for Demands
The Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee (VUPPC) has launched a 36-hour hunger strike as part of its ongoing agitation to protect the interests of the employees and stakeholders of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). The protest, which began on Wednesday, is aimed at drawing attention to the committee's demands, including halting the privatization of the steel plant and ensuring the welfare of its workforce.
Leaders of the VUPPC emphasized that the hunger strike symbolizes their determination to safeguard the public sector steel plant, which they view as a symbol of Andhra Pradesh’s industrial pride. Protesters, including employees, trade union members, and local activists, gathered at the strike venue, carrying placards and raising slogans against privatization.
The committee has reiterated its opposition to the central government's plans to divest its stake in the steel plant. They argue that privatization would not only jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of workers but also undermine the economic stability of the region.
The hunger strike has garnered widespread support from various political parties, trade unions, and civil society organizations. Local leaders and activists visited the strike venue to express solidarity with the protesters, urging the government to reconsider its stance on privatization.
VUPPC has warned of intensifying its agitation if their demands are not addressed. The committee has also called for greater public participation in their struggle to preserve the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant as a public sector entity and a cornerstone of regional development.
