Workers’ unions at Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) have opposed the proposed privatisation of Golden Jubilee Hospital, urging the port management to develop and modernise the facility using its own funds.
The hospital, located in Visakhapatnam, provides healthcare services to port employees, retired staff and their eligible dependants. Union representatives say the facility plays an important role in providing accessible medical care to the port workforce and their families.
Unions Raise Concerns Over Private Management
The unions have objected to proposals involving private participation in the hospital’s development and management. They argue that handing over the facility to a private agency could affect healthcare access and accountability for employees and pensioners.
Union leaders have called on the Port Authority to disclose the proposed tender conditions and provide clear assurances on the continuation of healthcare benefits for existing beneficiaries.
Demand for Port-Funded Modernisation
The unions have urged the Port Authority to invest its own resources in upgrading the hospital, including:
-
Improving medical infrastructure and facilities
-
Procuring modern medical equipment
-
Filling vacant medical and support staff positions
-
Strengthening healthcare services for employees and pensioners
-
Ensuring continued access to treatment for eligible beneficiaries
They have also called for the tender process to be reviewed in consultation with workers’ representatives.
Hospital Upgrade Proposal
The Port Authority has previously considered upgrading Golden Jubilee Hospital into a larger multi-specialty facility under a public-private partnership model. The proposal was intended to expand the hospital’s capacity and services.
However, unions have repeatedly opposed private management arrangements and demanded that the port retain control of the hospital. The current dispute concerns the terms and implications of the proposed development and management process.
Unions Warn of Further Action
Union representatives have indicated that they may intensify their protests if their concerns are not addressed. They are seeking clarity from the Port Authority on the future of the hospital, the status of the tender process and safeguards for beneficiaries.
The issue remains significant for port workers and retired employees who depend on the hospital for medical services.
