Zika Virus Cases Surge in Pune: Two Pregnant Women Among Three New Infections

The Zika virus outbreak in Pune continues to escalate, with three new cases confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections in the city to 36.

The latest cases include two pregnant women from Kothrud, according to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

Rising Numbers and Active Transmission:

Since June 20, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported 36 Zika virus cases, including 13 pregnant women. The virus is actively being transmitted in 11 areas: Karve Nagar-Warje, Hadapsar, Kothrud-Bavdhan, Aundh-Baner, Sinhagad Road, Nagar Road, Kondhwa-Yewalewadi, and Yerawada, among others.

Details of New Cases:

The newly infected include a 28-year-old woman from Kothrud who is 32 weeks pregnant. Despite mild symptoms of joint pain and fever, her anomaly scan reports are normal. Her samples, sent to the NIV on Monday, confirmed the infection on Wednesday. Another 24-year-old pregnant woman from Kothrud, at 27 weeks, also tested positive. She had symptoms like rash, fever, and joint pain since July 20. Additionally, a 35-year-old woman from Bibwewadi has tested positive for the virus.

Extensive Testing Efforts:

The PMC has ramped up testing efforts, sending samples from 56 suspected patients, including 49 pregnant women, to the NIV. This includes 17 pregnant women from Kharadi, seven from Lohegaon, and several from Kalas. So far, 448 samples have been sent for testing, with 395 from expecting mothers.

About Zika Virus:

Zika virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, also known for spreading dengue and chikungunya. Most Zika-infected individuals are asymptomatic (up to 80%) or exhibit mild symptoms such as fever, rash, conjunctivitis, body aches, and joint pain. The virus can be transmitted before, during, and after symptoms appear. In pregnant women, Zika can lead to severe complications such as congenital microcephaly, Guillain-Barre syndrome, and other neurological issues.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito bites and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms related to Zika virus infection.
