A Green Haven for Turtles: Eco-Friendly Turtle Beach Coming Soon to Sagarnagar
In a promising initiative towards environmental conservation, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is collaborating with the state forest department to establish an eco-friendly turtle beach at Sagarnagar, nestled along the picturesque Kailasagiri-Rushikonda stretch.
This ambitious project comes with a detailed plan, encapsulated in a comprehensive project report (DRP), estimating a budget of 15 crores.
The choice of Sagarnagar beach for this eco-friendly endeavor is strategic, considering its vast expanse and its role as a vital nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles.
Recognizing the significance of the beach in facilitating the hatching process for these gentle creatures, the authorities are committed to creating a safe haven for them.
The recent makeover of Sagarnagar beach, adorned with coconut tree plantations, sets the stage for the forthcoming eco-friendly turtle beach.
The beach has already proven its importance as a nesting ground, as evidenced by the release of 700 tiny Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings into the sea just six months ago.
This release was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Andhra Pradesh forest department, who have been diligently conserving and protecting turtle nests along the coast.
The process involves safeguarding the turtle eggs from natural predators and other hazards, with the forest department storing them in secure locations for artificial hatching.
This period of incubation typically spans 45 to 60 days, culminating in the emergence of tiny turtles ready to embark on their journey into the sea. Impressively, last year alone witnessed the release of over 50,000 hatchlings from more than 650 nests.
What makes the Sagarnagar initiative particularly noteworthy is its commitment to being an eco-friendly turtle beach. Recognizing the sensitivity of Olive Ridley turtles to their nesting environment, the project emphasizes a clean and plastic-free habitat.
This dedication aligns with the ethos of conservation, ensuring that the turtles' nesting sites remain undisturbed and conducive to their natural life cycle.
As the eco-friendly turtle beach takes shape, it not only signifies a sanctuary for the majestic Olive Ridley turtles but also stands as a testament to the community's commitment to environmental sustainability. Sagarnagar is poised to become not just a beach but a thriving ecosystem where nature and humanity coexist harmoniously.
