Andhra Pradesh Braces for Historic Surge in Voter Turnout

Andhra Pradesh, particularly Visakhapatnam, is poised for a monumental surge in voter participation come Monday's scheduled elections.

Political circles are abuzz with discussions on how varying turnout percentages might sway electoral fortunes.

The potential impact of turnout scenarios—below 75%, between 75% and 80%, and exceeding 80%—is under intense scrutiny.

In the 2019 assembly elections, Andhra Pradesh witnessed a remarkable 79.7% voter turnout, marking a significant increase from the 76% recorded in 2014.

Analysis reveals a surge in voter participation across 121 assembly constituencies compared to the previous election, while 54 constituencies witnessed a decline.

The influx of migrants and NRIs returning to their native places is expected to further elevate the voting percentage.

An estimated 5 to 10 lakh migrant workers and employees, holding voting rights in Andhra Pradesh despite working outside the state, are anticipated to cast their ballots.

Local enthusiasm for the electoral process is palpable, reflected in the record number of postal ballots utilized by employees, surging from 2.34 lakh in 2019 to 4.44 lakh in 2024.

A senior political figure from north coastal Andhra Pradesh anticipates a voting percentage ranging between 75% to 85%, attributing it to the heated contest between the YSRCP and TDP alliance and heightened local interest.

Andhra Pradesh's political consciousness historically translates into robust voter turnout, with the state ranking second in 2019 parliamentary elections, trailing only behind West Bengal.

Notably, three Lok Sabha constituencies—Bapatla, Ongole, and Narasaraopet—from Andhra Pradesh secured positions among the top 10 constituencies with the highest voter turnout nationwide in 2019, surpassing their previous records from 2014.

Dr. V Hari Babu from Andhra University highlights the state's political activism and astute awareness of national politics as driving forces behind its consistently high voter turnout.
