Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh – The Fishery Survey of India (FSI) has unveiled plans to procure two state-of-the-art survey vessels to bolster its capabilities in assessing and managing marine fishery resources along India's east and west coasts. This strategic move aims to enhance the sustainable development of the nation's fisheries sector.

Established in 1946, the FSI has been at the forefront of surveying and assessing fishery resources within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and adjacent areas. Over the years, the institute has evolved to meet the growing data requirements essential for the optimal utilization and sustainable development of marine resources. 

The decision to acquire new vessels comes in response to the aging fleet currently in operation. Many of FSI's vessels, some over four decades old, have been undergoing frequent repairs, leading to delays in annual fisheries surveys. In 2020, 11 out of 12 vessels were in dry docks for maintenance, highlighting the pressing need for modernization. 

The new survey vessels are expected to be equipped with advanced hydrographic systems, including Multi Beam Echo Sounders, Side Scan Sonars, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). These technologies will enable precise mapping, environmental monitoring, and data collection, thereby supporting the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.

This initiative aligns with India's broader maritime strategy, emphasizing the importance of scientific exploration and sustainable resource utilization. By enhancing its survey capabilities, the FSI aims to provide valuable data to policymakers, ensuring informed decisions for the conservation and development of the country's marine resources.

The acquisition of these vessels underscores the FSI's commitment to advancing India's fisheries sector, ensuring that marine resources are managed effectively for the benefit of current and future generations.
