In a major step towards sustainable marine ecosystem management, the Andhra Pradesh government has initiated the installation of artificial reefs along the Visakhapatnam coastline. Launched under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the project aims to enhance fish stocks, protect marine biodiversity, and improve the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities.
Artificial reefs, which are man-made underwater structures, are designed to mimic the functions of natural coral reefs. They provide habitat, food, and breeding grounds for various marine species, helping to regenerate fish populations that have been impacted by overfishing and environmental degradation.
The state fisheries department, in collaboration with central agencies, has strategically deployed these reef units in designated zones identified through marine studies. The initiative is expected to stabilize local fishery resources, support ecological balance, and open new opportunities for eco-tourism and sustainable fishing practices.
Officials noted that the project not only aligns with India’s Blue Economy goals but also empowers local communities through resource regeneration. “These reefs will act as underwater shelters that support marine life and contribute to long-term ecological and economic benefits,” said a senior fisheries officer during the launch event.
With Visakhapatnam being a key fishing hub on the eastern coast, this initiative marks a significant commitment to balancing marine conservation with coastal development.
