Andhra Pradesh Ranks 2nd Among States in JN.1 Cases

In the latest reports, Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the second-highest state in India with 280 cases of the Covid-19 subvariant JN.1 and its lineages, accounting for over 13% of the total cases detected nationwide.

Andhra Pradesh follows Maharashtra, which leads with 565 reported cases, while Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, and Goa also show significant infection numbers related to this subvariant.

Medical professionals in Visakhapatnam hospitals note that symptoms caused by the JN.1 subvariant are largely similar to previous variants, albeit with a tendency to induce more gastrointestinal symptoms and less pronounced fever.

The state detected its first JN.1 case in December 2023, with 280 infections recorded since then, representing over 80% of the total COVID-19 cases during that period. However, the actual number of JN.1 infections might be higher due to limited genome sequencing of positive samples.

Despite concerns about a surge during the holiday season, Andhra Pradesh has not experienced widespread outbreaks. Few cases required hospitalization, and most patients recovered without complications.

Dr. K Rambabu, director of Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences, suggests that the JN.1 subvariant appears to be less infectious and lacks significant immune evasion capabilities compared to its predecessors.

He further highlights that acquired immunity from previous infections and vaccinations might have contributed to a degree of herd immunity, possibly explaining the recent slowdown in Covid-19 cases despite the virus's ongoing evolution.

Andhra Pradesh has reported a total of 23.41 lakh Covid-19 cases since its first detection in March 2020, with 14,733 deaths attributed to the disease's complications.
