AP Police Launches Anti-Drug Drive "Sankalpam"
Visakhapatnam: In a major step against drug cultivation and addiction, the Andhra Pradesh Police have launched an anti-drug initiative, "Sankalpam," aimed at curbing cannabis cultivation and addressing drug addiction. The launch event took place at the Vizianagaram Government Medical College, with Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Gopinath Jatti and Superintendent of Police (SP) Vakul Jindal leading the program.
During the event, DIG Jatti announced that recent crackdowns have led to the destruction of over 10,000 acres of cannabis crops and the arrest of 3,000 individuals involved in cultivation and smuggling operations. He highlighted the importance of a multi-faceted approach to tackle the state's drug problem, aligning with the government’s 100-day anti-narcotics plan. “The police department will intensify efforts to control the cultivation and usage of ganja and other illegal substances, working daily towards a drug-free state,” he said.
SP Vakul Jindal emphasized the significance of education and prevention over strict enforcement alone. He shared that awareness programs would be a cornerstone of the drive, with a focus on providing alternative livelihoods for farmers who previously depended on cannabis cultivation. As part of the event, a presentation showcased the severe health impacts of drug abuse.
In a bid to strengthen community involvement, an anti-drugs committee was formed at the event, composed of students, faculty, college management, and local law enforcement. The committee aims to identify individuals struggling with addiction and offer support, marking a collaborative step toward a healthier, drug-free society.
