CBI Arrests DRM of East Coast Railway in Rs. 25 Lakh Bribery Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of East Coast Railways, Waltair Division, Visakhapatnam, along with two private firm proprietors, for their alleged involvement in a Rs. 25 lakh bribery case. The bribe was reportedly paid to reduce penalties imposed on a private firm for underperformance in contracts awarded by East Coast Railways.
The case was initiated following allegations of corruption and criminal conspiracy. It was revealed that bills amounting to Rs. 3.17 crores, raised by a private company, were delayed, leading to the imposition of a hefty penalty by the Railways. To evade these penalties, the proprietors of two private firms based in Mumbai and Pune allegedly approached the DRM, who demanded a bribe of Rs. 25 lakh to reduce the penalties. Subsequently, a reduced penalty was imposed after the DRM's intervention.
The CBI caught the DRM red-handed during the exchange of the bribe in Mumbai. Searches at the DRM's premises uncovered Rs. 87.6 lakh in cash, jewelry worth Rs. 72 lakh, property documents, bank account details, and other incriminating evidence. The investigation also revealed substantial investments made in properties and other assets.
This high-profile arrest underscores the CBI's commitment to curbing corruption in public service. Investigations are ongoing, and further details are awaited.
