Celebrating National Science Day in Visakhapatnam
In commemoration of National Science Day, Vignan’s Institute of Information Technology (VIIT) in Visakhapatnam organized a science project expo, underscoring the importance of scientific inquiry and innovation.
National Science Day, observed annually on February 28, pays homage to the renowned Indian physicist Sir CV Raman, whose groundbreaking discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928 earned him the Nobel Prize in 1930.
At VIIT, Rector V Madhusudan Rao emphasized the practical applications of science in daily life, urging students to cultivate a scientific mindset to drive future research and development endeavors. Principal J Sudhakar, faculty, and students actively participated in the celebrations, highlighting the pivotal role of science in shaping the world.
Meanwhile, the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam also marked the occasion with Chief Staff Officer (Technical) of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Rear Admiral Nelson D’Souza, presiding as the chief guest. Floral tributes were paid to Sir CV Raman, underscoring his enduring legacy in scientific discovery.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director of NSTL, emphasized the significance of indigenous technologies in fostering self-reliance, particularly in the development of advanced underwater weaponry for the Indian Navy. Rear Admiral Nelson D’Souza reaffirmed the crucial role of science in maritime security and encouraged NSTL to continue innovating in stealth technology for enhanced ship and submarine security.
In recognition of their exemplary contributions to research and development, several scientists were honored with silicon medals. Additionally, engaging activities such as quiz and painting competitions were organized for students from government schools, followed by the distribution of prizes to the winners, fostering a spirit of scientific inquiry and innovation among the youth.
