Challenges Faced by Visakhapatnam Airport due to Runway Closure: APATA Plea for Extended Flight Operations

Visakhapatnam, the bustling metropolis of Andhra Pradesh, is poised for substantial growth and development. However, a critical concern looms as the primary runway of Visakhapatnam Airport faces imminent closure for resurfacing.

The closure during night hours will impact numerous flights, disrupt air connectivity, and hinder economic activities. This article sheds light on the situation, its repercussions, and the plea for an extended flight schedule.

Resurfacing Woes:
Visakhapatnam, a key hub on the east coast of India, is renowned for its economic prowess and strategic importance. The impending resurfacing of the primary runway, a shared resource for both civilian and military flights, is set to commence from November 2023 to March 2024. This operation will result in the closure of the runway during the night hours, from 9 PM to 8 AM the following day. The decision's aftermath is estimated to affect around 10 to 12 flights, including the sole international route operated by Scoot Airways to Singapore.

Disrupting Air Connectivity:
The impact of the restricted hours on flight operations will reverberate across the region. Notably, Visakhapatnam serves as a vital gateway for travelers, businesses, and investors. With approximately 90 global connections routed via Singapore, the closure poses a significant threat to air connectivity and the ease of doing business.

Economic Implications:
Visakhapatnam's prominence as Andhra Pradesh's proposed capital and its recent Global Investors Meet underscores the city's economic aspirations. The upcoming winter season, marked by tourist influx, weddings, and festivals, intensifies the demand for air travel. Moreover, a surge in investors and business visitors highlights the critical need for efficient air connectivity. The decision to curtail flight operations, therefore, stands as a roadblock to both economic growth and development.

A Plea for Consideration:
In light of these pressing concerns, the Andhra Pradesh Air Travellers Association (APATA) appeals for reconsideration of the restricted hours. The association advocates for a rescheduled timeline, proposing a shift from 11:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following day. This adjustment would enable seamless flight operations, uphold air connectivity, and stimulate economic activities.

A Call for Collaboration:
As Visakhapatnam aspires to contribute significantly to India's economic landscape, collaboration between civil aviation and authorities becomes paramount. The appeal is not merely to address immediate challenges but to support the broader vision of making India the world's third-largest economy. Aligning with the Prime Minister's vision, extending flying slots for civilian aircraft in emerging cities like Visakhapatnam is a crucial step toward achieving this goal.

Visakhapatnam's growth trajectory hinges on efficient air connectivity, especially during peak periods of economic activity. The impending closure of the primary runway highlights the delicate balance between infrastructure development and sustaining economic momentum. As the city reaches for new heights, a collaborative effort between authorities and aviation stakeholders is essential to mitigate challenges, uphold air connectivity, and foster economic prosperity.
