Continuation of Vizag Airport Until Infrastructure Development
The citizens of Visakhapatnam, along with prominent industrial stakeholders, have strongly urged the government to keep the current Vizag airport operational until critical infrastructure projects, including 12 flyovers, a metro rail, and the coastal corridor road, are completed.
This request stems from the concerns over the logistical challenges and increased travel costs associated with the transition to the new Bhogapuram airport prematurely.
The proposed Bhogapuram airport, located about 80 kilometers from key industrial hubs such as Pharma City, the Steel Plant, Apparel Park, and VSEZ, could result in taxi fares exceeding airfare for many travelers. The time spent navigating congested routes, especially during peak hours, would significantly increase, disrupting both business operations and routine travel.
O. Naresh Kumar, Vice President of the AP Air Travellers Association, emphasized the importance of maintaining the existing airport as an interim solution. He noted that shifting all operations to Bhogapuram without adequate connecting infrastructure would adversely affect the industrial ecosystem and hinder economic growth.
While Bhogapuram airport is a promising long-term project, stakeholders insist on a phased approach. They believe that critical infrastructure such as metro connectivity, flyovers, and roads should be completed first to ensure seamless travel. This balanced strategy would not only support the city’s rapid industrial expansion but also uphold the convenience of travelers.
The request underlines the importance of thoughtful planning to align infrastructure development with the needs of the region, ensuring that Visakhapatnam continues to thrive as a growing industrial and economic hub.
