Dr. Sumita Shankar's Pioneering Work in Elephantiasis Treatment Showcased at ASICON 2023

Renowned plastic surgeon Dr Sumita Shankar presented a compelling case series on elephantiasis (filariasis) at the Association of Surgeons of India 83rd National Conference (ASICON 2023) here on Saturday.

The series sheds light on patients grappling with massive elephant-like legs, particularly those who underwent bilateral inguinal block dissection for cancer in private parts, simplifying complications of scrotal lymphedema.

In her keynote address, Dr. Sumita showcased groundbreaking work, demonstrating the application of her indigenous design in Negative Pressure Compressive Therapy (NPCT) and Lympho-Liposuction. These innovations have proven to enhance surgical safety by reducing blood loss and complications.

Dr. Sumita expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy for incorporating these policies into Aarogyasri, enabling her to offer invaluable assistance to numerous patients at GGH Guntur within a short period. This is particularly significant as the costs of such surgeries in private hospitals can be exorbitant, ranging from 4 to 5 lakh rupees.

Established in 1938, the Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON 2023) provides a platform for Indian surgeons to share experiences and enhance surgical skills. The 83rd National Conference, held in Visakhapatnam from the 13th to the 16th of this month, witnessed participation from experts nationwide, with over five thousand delegates.

Dr. Sumita, serving as an observer for the Andhra Pradesh State Medical Council, was also appointed as an Honorary Executive Committee Member at the recently concluded ASICON 2023, further recognizing her contributions to the field.
