Early Detection of IIH Crucial to Preserve Vision, Say Experts
Visakhapatnam: Experts are urging immediate medical attention for those experiencing severe headaches, unexplained head pressure, and vision problems, as these may be early signs of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). Left untreated, IIH can lead to permanent vision loss.
Marking September as IIH Awareness Month, medical professionals and NGOs emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. A collaborative effort between the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and IIH Warriors India brought together patients, caregivers, and doctors to raise awareness through the ‘IIH Explained’ initiative.
Kavya Poornima Balajepalli, founder of IIH Warriors India, shared her personal journey of vision loss due to IIH and stressed the need for community support and awareness. "Through our awareness camps, we aim to help individuals recognize IIH symptoms early and access the right medical care," she said.
Dr. Virender Sachdeva, a neuro-ophthalmologist at LVPEI, emphasized that untreated IIH can lead to irreversible complications. He highlighted the importance of addressing warning signs like severe headaches and vision disturbances promptly, as timely treatment can prevent vision loss.
Experts believe that a multidisciplinary approach, involving various healthcare professionals, is key to managing IIH effectively. Awareness campaigns, both online and offline, are helping families spot symptoms early and seek proper treatment, as illustrated by a recent case where timely intervention saved a young girl’s vision.
Increased use of steroids, antibiotics, and rising obesity rates are among the factors contributing to the surge in IIH cases, highlighting the need for continuous vigilance and awareness.
