"EmpowHER Walkathon Challenges Societal Discrimination and Advocates for Girls' Empowerment"

A significant stride towards empowering girls and combating societal discrimination took place at the Beach Road in Visakhapatnam during the 'Walk to EmpowHER' walkathon organized by Child Rights & You.

This event aimed to pave the way for a brighter future for girls, fostering confidence as they pursue their dreams. Timed just ahead of National Girl Child Day on January 24, the walkathon carried a powerful message of empowerment.

Peter Suneel, the head of CRY's South project and the event's host, emphasized the necessity of such initiatives to empower girls. Notably, the event unfolded simultaneously in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, amplifying its impact across multiple cities.

Guduri Sita Mahalakshmi, chairperson of Savithribai Phule Educational and Charitable Trust, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In her inaugural address at RK Beach, she shed light on the prevalent discrimination faced by girls in society – from denial of education to early marriage and sexual assaults.

Mahalakshmi stressed the urgency of challenging and transforming this mindset, advocating for girls' empowerment through education, equal opportunities, and the dismantling of stereotypes. She urged for the creation of a society where girls are not just tolerated but celebrated, respected, and truly empowered.

Harsha Nandan, the chairperson of Young Indians Visakhapatnam chapter and a guest participant, echoed the sentiment, stating, "The event serves as a platform to amplify the voices of girl children. Their dreams and aspirations deserve our unwavering support."

Various organizations, including Vizag Walkers, Walkers International, Visakhapatnam District Sports Authority, CEFHA, and students from different colleges, including Government Women’s College, Visakhapatnam, actively participated in the walkathon, making it a collaborative effort to champion the cause of girls' empowerment.
