Equipment to identify rip currents at Vizag beaches will be set up by AU and ISRO

As per the official statistics, from 2012 to 2022, over 200 people drowned to death on Vizag beaches, of which over 120 deaths occurred on RK Beach alone.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Andhra University, and National Centre for Earth Sciences (NCES) have now found the constant rip current zones at RK Beach, Rushikonda Beach, Bheemili Beach, and Yarada Beach. These rip current zones pose a major threat to people visiting the beach.

Rip current forecasting equipment to identify the rip currents is being planned. This will aid in forecasting the occurrence of rip currents on a specific day and time. This will help in warning the Marines and the local police to react quickly and alert the beach visitors.

Rip currents are literally the "death current." They are the strong and narrow channels of fast-moving water flowing from the shore to the sea. These currents pull people towards the sea, which makes it difficult for them to stay afloat. Most people die when they enter the rip-current zone in water deeper than their knees. Even professional swimmers struggle to swim against the rip current in the evening.

A few beaches with strong rip currents can be found opposite Kalimata Temple, behind the Kurusura submarine. Rushikonda Beach is on the right side of the water sports area and a few feet away from the marine police tower.
