Fatal Industrial Accidents at JN Pharmacity in Visakhapatnam

In a series of tragic events, two separate industrial accidents at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharmacity (JN Pharmacity) in Visakhapatnam have claimed the lives of two workers and left five others injured.

The first incident occurred at Alkali Metals Limited within JN Pharmacity, a designated Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

At around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, a 33-year-old worker lost his life while five others sustained severe injuries. The accident, which took place in Unit-3 of the factory, was reportedly caused by a leakage of methyl nitrate gas, according to Inspector Bala Surya Rao.

Among the injured were B. Raveendra (28) of Chodavaram, V. Apparao (53) of Hyderabad, Y. Gopalarao (41) from ASR district, A. Srinivasa Rao (38) of Sabbavaram, S. Sivakumar (43) of Anakapalli, and Ch. Ramana of Poosapatirega in Vizianagaram district.

Tragically, Ramana succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Anakapalli, while the others are currently receiving medical care at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam.

Following these distressing incidents, CPI(M) Anakapalli district general secretary K. Lokanadham has demanded urgent action.

He urged authorities to provide a compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of the deceased and ensure advanced treatment for the injured individuals.

Additionally, Lokanadham called for a thorough investigation into the accidents and emphasized the need for strict repercussions against the management responsible.

Lokanadham highlighted a worrying trend of safety negligence among pharmaceutical companies operating within the area, leading to numerous casualties among workers.

He criticized the lack of enforcement by regulatory bodies such as the Pollution Control Board and the Factories Department, stressing their failure to uphold mandatory safety standards in industrial settings.
