Gambusia Fish Deployment: GVMC's Strategic Move for Mosquito Control

C.M. Saikanth Varma, the Commissioner of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), has revealed plans to release six lakh Gambusia fish into the city's water bodies.

This initiative is part of the corporation's proactive strategy to combat the potential spread of seasonal diseases like dengue through effective mosquito control.

Gambusia fish are known for their role in naturally controlling mosquito populations, making them a valuable asset in disease prevention efforts.

Commissioner Varma not only announced the impending release but also urged residents to play their part in preventing mosquito breeding in their surroundings. He specifically endorsed the 'Friday-Dry Day' initiative as a community-driven approach to mosquito control.

Highlighting the scale of the initiative, Varma shared that a total of 20 lakh Gambusia fish are slated for release across 7,130 water bodies.

The malaria wing has already contributed to this effort by releasing 8 lakh fish, emphasizing the collaborative and comprehensive approach undertaken by GVMC in safeguarding public health.
