Gangamma Jatara Celebrated at Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour
The annual Gangamma Jatara was celebrated with fervor at the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour (VFH) on Tuesday.
This cherished religious festival marks a significant event for the local fishermen, who honor it just before the commencement of their fishing operations following the 61-day annual fishing ban.
Fisherfolk, particularly the women, alongside their families, adorned themselves in traditional attire to partake in the festivities.
They gathered to offer prayers to the ‘Goddess of Water,’ seeking her blessings for a bountiful catch and the safe return of their men as they embark on their seasonal fishing activities starting June 14th night.
The day-long celebrations began at dawn, featuring a series of traditional rituals.
Women poured pots of turmeric and vermilion mixed with milk into the sea, conducted pujas, and performed animal sacrifices, including sheep and chickens, to honor the goddess.
"Regardless of political affiliations or financial status, we all stand united before Goddess Gangamma," stated Arjili Das, a leader within the fishing community.
We observe this festival on the Tuesday before the ban period ends to pray for our safety while fishing."
Officials highlighted that the fishing ban, which aims to protect marine species along the Visakhapatnam coast, concludes on June 14.
Fishermen are set to resume their activities from that night, with many prepared to sail after 9 p.m.
