Vegetable Prices Soar in Visakhapatnam Amid Hot Weather and Low Production
In recent weeks, vegetable prices have soared in Visakhapatnam, with the exception of brinjal. The rythu bazaars are seeing prices ranging from ₹30 to ₹80 per kg, while private markets are selling vegetables at double these rates.
The primary reasons behind this spike are the hot summer temperatures and low production levels.
Current Market Prices
As of June 11, the prices in rythu bazaars are as follows:
- Tomato : ₹50/kg
- Onion : ₹37/kg
- Potato : ₹28/kg
- Carrot : ₹30/kg
- Cabbage : ₹24/kg
- Cauliflower : ₹46/kg
- Cucumber : ₹21/kg
- Lady’s Finger : ₹34/kg
- Ridge Gourd & Bitter Gourd : ₹46/kg each
- Snake Bean (Barbatti) : ₹50/kg
- Beans : ₹84 and ₹110/kg (two varieties)
- Green Potato (Potals) : ₹32/kg
- Capsicum : ₹80/kg
In private markets and from street vendors, these prices nearly double. For example, tomatoes are sold at ₹80 to ₹90 per kg, and potatoes at ₹60 per kg.
Reasons for Price Hike
Marketing Department officials explain that tomatoes, sourced primarily from Madanapalli, Anantapur, and Chittoor, are in short supply due to low production.
This shortage is expected to last for the next two weeks until more tomatoes arrive from Palamaneru and other regions of Rayalaseema and the Andhra-Karnataka border.
Similarly, onion prices tend to rise during summer every alternate year due to reduced production from Maharashtra, a major onion-producing state.
Stable Supply of Certain Vegetables
Brinjal remains an exception to this trend, with ample supply coming from areas surrounding Visakhapatnam. Carrots, sourced from West Bengal and Secunderabad, are also available in adequate quantities.
Official Insights
G. Prasad Rao, Estate Officer of MVP Rythu Bazaar, the largest rythu bazaar in the city, attributes the price hike to high temperatures and reduced crop cultivation. He anticipates that prices will stabilize in the coming weeks.
Additional Price Observations
Apart from the basic vegetables, ginger is currently priced at ₹160 per kg, sourced from Similiguda and parts of the Andhra-Odisha Border.
The price is expected to decrease once supplies from Bengaluru increase. Garlic is being sold at ₹180 per kg, typically imported from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
In summary, the hot weather and low production have significantly impacted vegetable prices in Visakhapatnam, with brinjal being a notable exception.
Market dynamics suggest that prices may stabilize as supply chains adjust in the coming weeks.
