GVMC Cracks Down on Illegal Posters in Visakhapatnam to Preserve City’s Beauty

Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has intensified its efforts to remove illegal posters from public properties across the city, aiming to preserve Visakhapatnam's beauty and cleanliness.

Chief City Planner Suresh Kumar announced that stringent measures will be taken against individuals and organizations that put up posters, paintings, and writings on city walls, electricity poles, transformers, medians, dustbins, and other public spaces. Offenders will face fines of up to ₹1 lakh under the 1997 Act for obstructing the city’s beautification initiatives.

“This initiative is part of GVMC’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the aesthetic appeal of Visakhapatnam, renowned as one of Andhra Pradesh’s most beautiful cities,” said Suresh Kumar. An awareness program was held at the GVMC headquarters on Friday, attended by members of the Printing Press Association of Visakhapatnam, religious organizations, and educational institutions.

Suresh Kumar emphasized that international visitors frequently cite Visakhapatnam as a model of cleanliness and aesthetic appeal. The GVMC invests crores of rupees in beautification efforts, which are undermined by the rampant placement of posters, paintings, and informal hoardings by businesses, religious groups, educational institutions, and entertainment organizations.

He also highlighted the problem of unauthorized postings of contact numbers for septic cleaning services on electrical poles. The awareness program promoted alternative advertising methods such as FM radio, cable TV, private agency hoardings, film slides, newspapers, and social media to reduce the reliance on posters and banners for commercial, entertainment, and religious advertisements.

Suresh Kumar urged printing press owners, educational institutions, religious organizations, and businesses to support the city’s development by refraining from unauthorized postings. He specifically advised printers to include their phone numbers and company names on their materials to ensure accountability.

“By working together, we can maintain Visakhapatnam’s status as a clean and beautiful city,” he concluded.
