Heightened surveillance on bookies ahead of ICC World Cup

With the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup creating excitement in the port city, there's an anticipated surge in reported betting cases, based on past patterns. It's even suggested that almost every ball is being wagered on.

In response, the city's law enforcement is shifting its focus toward identifying potential cricket betting networks in the area. A recent incident involving 11 individuals from Anakapalli and Visakhapatnam highlights this recurring concern.

Following this incident, the police have noticed a significant rise in online cricket betting, extending its reach into rural areas.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) K. Srinivasa Rao cautioned that while bookies may initially promise profits, they can ultimately lead to significant financial losses as individuals progress. Moreover, bookies can manipulate application servers, increasing the risk to bettors' finances.

Srinivasa Rao said, as per the instructions of Police Commissioner Ravi Shankar, we are keeping round-the-clock surveillance on the betting bookies in the city and urged the public to abstain from participating in such activities that can result in financial ruin.

He encouraged those victimized by betting groups to come forward, allowing the police to collaborate with banking authorities to freeze illicitly obtained funds.

Visakhapatnam city has a history of dealing with betting gangs comprising individuals from various districts. These groups operate from rented accommodations, and upscale duplex apartments, and maintain connections with bookmakers nationwide.

In June of this year, the city police dismantled an online gaming and betting operation, resulting in the arrest of 19 individuals. This operation was being run from a residence posing as an online grocery business in Madhurawada under the PM Palem police station's jurisdiction.

The police successfully froze ₹5 crore in this case. In September of the previous year, the police apprehended a gang operating along Beach Road, freezing nearly ₹70 lakh. Additionally, in May 2022, the police arrested a gang in Duvvada involved in betting activities related to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
