ICAR-CMFRI Vizag Hosts Awareness Event on Marine Biodiversity and Endangered Species Conservation

The Visakhapatnam Regional Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) recently organized an awareness programme to promote the conservation of marine biodiversity, with a focus on endangered species.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including fishermen, government officials, and conservation experts, to discuss critical issues such as coastal pollution and harmful fishing practices.

Held on Tuesday, the programme spotlighted the protection of marine species like whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and endangered fish and shellfish listed under the Wildlife Protection Act. The gathering aimed to foster greater community involvement in the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems.

Prominent attendees included representatives from fishermen’s associations, marine police, wildlife authorities, the navy, coast guard, and NGOs. Discussions addressed the adverse effects of coastal pollution, overfishing, and human activities on marine ecosystems. Experts emphasized the importance of raising awareness, enhancing rescue operations, and building a network of conservation leaders to accelerate wildlife protection efforts.

Chief Guest Srikanthanatha Reddy of the Visakhapatnam Forest Department presided over the event, with Dr. G. Mangamma from the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park delivering the lead address. The event also featured contributions from experts such as Dr. Pralay Ranjan Behera, Dr. Manas HM, and Dr. Joe K. Kizhakudan.

A highlight of the event was the felicitation of 25 fishermen from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam districts, who were honored for their efforts in rescuing endangered marine species. The fishermen were awarded medals and certificates for their contributions, sharing their experiences and encouraging others to participate in future rescue operations.

The programme, funded by the Andhra Pradesh State Biodiversity Board, concluded with discussions on incentivizing rescue efforts and increasing public participation in marine conservation. The event reinforced the commitment of ICAR-CMFRI to marine research and conservation, a mission it has upheld for over seven decades in Andhra Pradesh.
