IIPE Advances in Internationalisation and Industry Projects

Visakhapatnam : The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) is making significant strides in internationalisation and industry collaboration. In the past year, the institute has secured research grants amounting to ₹50 crore.

One of IIPE's standout offerings is its unique sandwich PhD programme, allowing researchers to spend up to a year at a foreign university. Additionally, IIPE students have the opportunity to pursue an MS degree from the University of Houston or an MBA from IIM Visakhapatnam without needing to clear the GRE or CAT exams.

Prof. Shalivahan, the director of IIPE, highlighted the introduction of floating electives for undergraduate students. These electives include international and industry-focused options, taught by foreign faculty and industry professionals.

The institute is also leveraging its memoranda of understanding with foreign institutions to support students in projects and research work.

A recent initiative was a three-day Indo-US workshop on hydrogen and global decarbonisation, in collaboration with Stony Brook University, New York. Similar workshops with other prestigious foreign institutions are planned for the future.

To further bolster its academic environment, IIPE provides financial assistance for faculty to host foreign faculty or post-doctoral fellows annually.

Faculty members are encouraged to visit foreign institutions during vacations, and students are supported with travel expenses to present their research at international conferences.

Prof. K. Vijaya Kumar, IIPE's dean of research and development, detailed the institute’s recent industry projects. Collaborating with NTPC, IIPE is working on a desalination-based hydrogen project, positioning Visakhapatnam as a potential global green hydrogen hub.

The institute is also engaged in projects with Oil India Limited, NMDC, ONGC, and the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH).

Notably, IIPE is developing a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for corrosion mitigation at NTPC Simhadri and conducting geoscientific data analysis of the Kerala-Konkan Basin for the DGH. These initiatives are making substantial contributions to national development.
