Illegal IPL Cricket Betting Racket Exposed in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli District



The Visakhapatnam City Task Force and the City Police carried out raids and uncovered an IPL cricket betting racket in Pilakavanipalem, resulting in the arrest of three individuals. These individuals were allegedly involved in organizing an online gambling network and had been in contact with other gamblers. During the raid, the police seized electronics, such as a TV and laptop, and cash worth Rs 1,85,000.


Suicide due to this betting was recorded in Anakapalli District. A young boy named Madhu Kumar, aged 20 took his life due to financial pressure after losing the amount in betting. Madhu had borrowed a sum of Rs 90,000 from an acquaintance to fund his betting habit and lost it all. Unable to cope with the pressure, he hanged himself to death on Tuesday, April 26, 2023. The recent incidents of illegal IPL cricket betting in Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli District have raised serious concerns about the growing menace of gambling in the city.

In Madhu Kumar's case, his mother has lodged a complaint with the Anakapalli rural police, alleging that Kannam Naidu was responsible for her son's death. According to her, Naidu had been providing hand loans and encouraging local youths to participate in betting activities. Based on the complaint, the cops have registered a case against Naidu under Section 306 of the IPC.
