Visakhapatnam International Airport Registers Unprecedented Growth

Visakhapatnam International Airport has witnessed remarkable growth, cementing its position as a key aviation hub in the region. In the financial year 2022-2023, the airport recorded a 55.14% surge in passenger traffic, with numbers climbing from 1.61 million to approximately 2.5 million. This growth is attributed to the resumption of post-pandemic travel and a rise in both domestic and international flights.

In October 2024 alone, the airport handled 252,499 domestic passengers, marking an 8.83% increase from the same month in 2023. International passenger traffic also soared by 85.04%, growing from 5,175 to 9,576 travelers. Aircraft movements followed a similar trajectory, rising 41.13% from 14,851 to 20,961 flights during the same period.

Despite these impressive operational statistics, the airport has faced financial challenges in recent years. Between 2017-2022, it reported cumulative losses of ₹37.2 crore. However, the airport demonstrated profitability in 2019-2020, with a profit of ₹2.3 crore, suggesting a pathway to recovery.

Looking forward, plans for a greenfield international airport in Visakhapatnam, backed by a ₹4,000 crore investment from the GMR Group, promise to enhance the city's connectivity and economic prospects further.

This growth trajectory underscores Visakhapatnam Airport's strategic importance and its potential to drive regional development.
