Indira Priyadarshini Stadium in Visakhapatnam Receives Major Makeover
Visakhapatnam: After years of neglect, the Indira Priyadarshini Stadium in the One Town area of Visakhapatnam is finally getting a much-needed facelift.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has undertaken a comprehensive redevelopment project, with nearly 90% of the work already completed, according to GVMC officials. The remaining tasks are expected to be finished within a month.
The GVMC began the renovation of the stadium, which had fallen into a state of disrepair. The redevelopment has been extensive, covering the entrance, main block, ground, spectator stands, roads, and drainage system. With a budget of around ₹5 crore, the stadium has been almost entirely rebuilt.
The pavilion building has been modernized, featuring new glass panels and a refreshed look. Previously damaged pavilions have also been restored.
Spectator stands, once overgrown with unwanted plants and partially damaged, have been repainted, and new seating has been installed. Additionally, rooms and toilets have been repaired.
New cricket nets are being installed outside near the entrance block, allowing athletes full use of the stadium. Inside, new BT roads have been laid, with road markings currently underway. Drainage systems have been desilted and covered, and the stadium walls will soon be adorned with paintings of various sports legends.
Enhanced security measures have been implemented to prevent the entry of miscreants and ensure the stadium’s safety. Security personnel now guard the facility around the clock in shifts.
Superintending Engineer (SE) of Zone III, P.V.V. Satyanarayana Raju, stated that painting, road markings, and other finishing touches are being completed. He anticipates the remaining work will be finished within a month.
The Indira Priyadarshini Stadium, established in 1987, has a seating capacity of 25,000 and has hosted five One-Day International (ODI) cricket matches between 1988 and 2001. Notably, it hosted a World Cup match between Australia and Kenya in 1996.
The stadium was largely neglected after the construction of the Dr. YSR ACA VDCA Stadium at PM Palem, but the current redevelopment project aims to restore its former glory.
