INS Nirupak Decommissioned After 38 Years of Service

After faithfully serving the nation for 38 years, INS Nirupak, an indigenous survey ship, was decommissioned.

Launched on June 4, 1981, and commissioned on August 14, 1985, the ship played a crucial role in enhancing navigational safety in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Based in Visakhapatnam and recognized for its dedication to hydrography, INS Nirupak received the Admiral Jal Cursetji Rolling Trophy multiple times.

The ship actively participated in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, including the 2004 Tsunami Relief in Indonesia.

The decommissioning ceremony, held at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, marked the end of an era. However, it also signaled a new chapter for the Indian Navy's survey capabilities.

Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to the government of India, presided over the ceremony.

Looking ahead, the Indian Navy plans to introduce four state-of-the-art survey ships between 2024 and 2026.

These technologically advanced vessels aim to boost India's hydrographic capabilities, contributing to maritime navigation, scientific research, and disaster response. This expansion reflects the Indian Navy's commitment to maintaining excellence in maritime operations.
