Japan on High Alert: Tsunami Warning Follows Major Quakes

In the wake of a series of major earthquakes, Japan initially raised its highest-level tsunami alert, creating a wave of concern across the nation. The largest quake, with a magnitude of 7.6, triggered fires and building collapses on the west coast of Honshu, Japan's main island.

Though the extent of casualties and injuries remained unclear, the events prompted swift responses from authorities.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded over a dozen robust quakes in the Japan Sea off the coast of Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures, starting shortly after 4 p.m. local time. As government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi reported damages, including at least six homes with trapped occupants, concerns heightened.

Initially, the meteorological agency issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and lower-level warnings for the western coast of Honshu and Hokkaido.

Stressing the urgency, Hayashi urged residents to evacuate coastal areas promptly, emphasizing the critical need for swift action.

Despite later downgrading the alert to a regular tsunami, indicating potential waves up to 3 meters (10 feet), the possibility of aftershocks loomed, adding to the region's uncertainty.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK initially warned of torrents reaching 5 meters (16.5 feet), continuing alerts as aftershocks persisted.

Historically, returning for belongings after evacuation warnings has proven perilous, with instances of people being swept away even hours later. Evacuation centers, primarily stadiums, were set up for affected residents.

Media footage depicted chaotic scenes, including running through streets, fires erupting in neighborhoods, and significant infrastructure damage. While some sustained minor injuries during evacuation, reports of casualties or injuries remained unconfirmed.

The Meteorological Agency, in a news conference, highlighted the potential for more major quakes in the coming week, particularly within the next two or three days. As risks of landslides and house collapses loom, vigilance is crucial.

Takashi Wakabayashi, a worker in Ishikawa Prefecture, shared challenges faced at a convenience store, where a surge in customers tripled usual levels, indicating a rush for essential supplies.

Tsunami warnings extended beyond Japan, reaching parts of North Korea and Russia. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced the establishment of a special emergency center to ensure rapid information dissemination.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed readiness to provide necessary assistance, acknowledging Japan's vulnerability to seismic activities. The current situation echoes the nation's preparedness for natural disasters, reminiscent of the major quake and tsunami in 2011 that caused nuclear plant meltdowns.
