Kamran Akmal Apologizes to Harbhajan Singh for Disrespecting Arshdeep Singh's Religion During India vs Pakistan Match
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has publicly apologized to Harbhajan Singh for his controversial remarks about India pacer Arshdeep Singh’s religion during the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2024 match.
Akmal’s comments sparked outrage, particularly from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who called him out on social media.
Akmal expressed his remorse in a statement, saying, "I deeply regret my recent comments and sincerely apologize to Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful.
I have the utmost respect for Sikhs all over the world and never intended to hurt anyone. I am truly sorry. #Respect #Apology," Akmal posted on X, tagging Harbhajan Singh.
The incident occurred during a panel discussion on ARY News, where Akmal made a disparaging remark about Arshdeep Singh's religion. "Kuch bhi ho sakta hai... Dekhe last over karna Arshdeep Singh ne hai.
Waise uska rhythm nahi laga. 12 baj gaye hai (Anything can happen. The last over will be bowled by Arshdeep Singh; he hasn't looked in a great rhythm. And It is already 12)," Akmal joked, which was met with laughter from other panellists.
Harbhajan Singh did not take kindly to the comment and responded forcefully on social media. "Lakh di laanat tere Kamran Akmal. You should know the history of Sikhs before you open your filthy mouth.
We Sikhs saved your mothers and sisters when they were abducted by invaders, the time invariably was 12 o'clock. Shame on you...Have some gratitude," he wrote.
Despite the controversy, Arshdeep Singh's performance in the match was commendable. Tasked with defending 17 runs in the final over, Arshdeep gave away only 11 runs, securing a six-run victory for India. He also took the crucial wicket of Imad Wasim on the first delivery of the over, finishing with figures of 1/31 in his four overs.
### Match Recap: India Bowlers Defend Low Total Against Pakistan
India's innings got off to a rocky start after being sent in to bat by Pakistan captain Babar Azam. Openers Virat Kohli (4) and Rohit Sharma (13) struggled on a sluggish New York pitch that offered significant seam movement.
Rishabh Pant played a pivotal role, scoring 42 off 31 balls, including six fours, to give India's innings some momentum. He formed useful partnerships with Axar Patel (20 off 18 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (7 off 8 balls), but the lower middle order collapsed, and India was bowled out for 119 in 19 overs.
Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah were the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, each taking three wickets for 21 runs. Mohammed Amir and Shaheen Shah Afridi also contributed with wickets.
In response, Pakistan adopted a cautious approach. Mohammad Rizwan anchored the innings with 31 runs off 44 balls, but the Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24),
Took crucial wickets at regular intervals, preventing Pakistan from gaining momentum. Bumrah's exceptional spell earned him the 'Player of the Match' award.
The match highlighted intense competition and sportsmanship, marred only by the off-field controversy. Akmal's apology aims to mend relations and emphasize respect and unity in the cricketing community.
