Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Key Details and Developments

The tragic rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital have sparked outrage across the country.

This article provides an overview of the case, the subsequent investigations, and the reactions from various stakeholders.

The Incident:
On August 9, the semi-nude body of a female postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was on duty the previous night. Her father expressed his belief that his daughter was raped before being murdered, citing the injury marks on her body. A hospital doctor revealed that the victim had dinner with her juniors around 2 AM before heading to the seminar room to rest. Her body was found there the next morning.

Reactions and Protests:
The incident has led to widespread protests among junior doctors at the hospital, who have stopped working in all departments except the Emergency ward, demanding swift justice. Various student associations also organized rallies calling for a quick investigation. Opposition leaders, including BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, visited the hospital and demanded an independent investigation. Trinamool Congress leader Dr. Santanu Sen assured the public of a fair and transparent probe, while some members of the medical community alleged attempts to suppress the case.

Initial Autopsy Findings:
The initial autopsy confirmed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered, ruling out suicide. The report detailed injuries on multiple parts of the victim's body, including her eyes, mouth, neck, and private parts. A senior police officer noted that the crime likely occurred between 3 AM and 6 AM. The full autopsy report is awaited to provide further clarity on the case.

Arrest of Sanjoy Roy:
Sanjoy Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder. Roy had unrestricted access to various hospital departments due to his close connections with senior police officers. Investigators discovered that Roy, who had a history of domestic abuse and was addicted to pornography, attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes the morning after the crime. The police also recovered a torn Bluetooth earphone, which played a crucial role in identifying the culprit. Roy was placed in judicial custody for 14 days while the investigation continues.

Political and Legal Developments:
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused. She supported the junior doctors' protests but urged them to continue providing medical care. Banerjee also announced the establishment of police camps at hospitals to enhance security. The Calcutta High Court criticized the reappointment of the hospital's principal, who had initially suggested the victim's death was a suicide. The court ordered a review of the principal's actions and handed the case over to the CBI, which has since filed an FIR and is conducting its investigation.

Nationwide Impact and Conclusion:
The case has sparked nationwide protests, with junior doctors demanding justice and improved safety measures. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) called off their strike after meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi criticized the handling of the case, questioning the attempts to protect the accused instead of delivering justice. The case continues to unfold, with the medical community and the nation watching closely for justice to be served.
