Legal Action Against Untreated Sewage Entering Vizag Sea
Renowned environmentalist Dr. Rajendra Singh, known as the 'waterman of India,' took a step towards environmental justice by visiting Lawsons Bay Colony beach in Vizag.
This visit was prompted by the alarming issue of untreated sewage entering the sea.
Dr. Singh, along with local environmentalist Bolisetty Satyanarayana, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the high court to address the growing problem of sea pollution caused by toxic waste and untreated sewers.
The PIL is scheduled for a hearing on February 14, where the court will assess the urgency and impact of the issue.
The duo visited the beach to witness the situation firsthand, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
In 2017, Dr. Singh captured a video highlighting the problem, delivering it to the then GVMC commissioner.
Despite these efforts, no action was taken. Subsequently, in 2020, Dr. Singh, along with Satyanarayana, filed the PIL.
Their journey has involved navigating the legal system, with the High Court demanding a comprehensive report.
Dr. Singh expressed concern over the authorities submitting a misleading report.
The stark reality is that, for the past six years, 200 million litres of sewage has been daily flowing into the sea, causing severe damage to marine life and affecting the livelihoods of fishermen.
To underscore the gravity of the situation, the duo plans to present video evidence to the Chief Justice, urging prompt intervention to safeguard the marine environment and the well-being of the local community.
