Lifeguards Heroically Rescue Youths Amid Holi Festivities
During the vibrant celebrations of Holi, the spirit of joy was overshadowed by moments of danger as lifeguards sprang into action to rescue four young men at RK Beach and Appikonda Beach on Monday.
At RK Beach, a team comprising J. Harish, M. Naveen, B. Aravind, P. Achchanna, and M. Kishore acted swiftly to save Kaushik, an intermediate student of Sri Chaitanya College of Railway New Colony, and Bashir from Narayana College.
Meanwhile, at Appikonda Beach, lifeguards Venkatesh, Tatarao, and Lokesh Kumar came to the aid of S. Kumar and G. Kumar from Gajuwaka.
Reflecting on the rescue, M. Naveen Kumar, one of the lifeguards involved in the RK Beach operation, shared their protocol, stating, "As soon as we receive reports of missing persons in the sea, either from beach visitors or the police, we immediately jump into action.
Despite our capability to swim up to three kilometers from the shore, incidents typically occur within 100 meters of the coastline.
The lifeguards operate under the management of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), which oversees their deployment and salaries.
Their duties require them to be stationed from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at designated points and to respond promptly to emergency alerts from the police and the GVMC’s Command Control team.
Presently, 42 lifeguards are deployed across various points, including Bheemunipatnam, IT Junction, Sagar Nagar, Radisson Blu, Appughar, Jodugullapalem, RK Beach, Coastal Battery, Appikonda, and Yarada beaches.
Additionally, lifeguards are stationed at Mudasarlova and Meghadrigedda reservoirs, underscoring the comprehensive safety measures undertaken by the GVMC to protect beachgoers and revelers during festivities like Holi.
