Loss at the Zoo: Chimpanzee 'Cheepa' Passes Away

In a somber turn of events, the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam mourns the loss of Cheepa, a 29-year-old chimpanzee, who passed away on Wednesday. Cheepa, a female chimpanzee, had been a resident of the zoo since 2016 when she was gifted from an Israeli zoo.

According to zoo officials, Cheepa succumbed to acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. The postmortem report, conducted by the veterinary assistant surgeon at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, confirmed the cause of death.

While Cheepa's demise is a significant loss for the zoo, another female chimpanzee continues to reside in the enclosure.

The zoo authorities released a statement on Wednesday night, noting that the average lifespan of chimpanzees in the wild is around 30 years, highlighting Cheepa's relatively long life under zoo care.

The loss of Cheepa serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of providing proper care and attention to the animals under the zoo's care.
