Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister P. Narayana visited the Kapuluppada Dumping Yard in Visakhapatnam on September 19 and inspected the Biogas Plant and the Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste Processing Plant. He reviewed the functioning of the facilities and discussed their capacity, waste collection, processing methods and production with officials.

During the inspection, the Minister directed officials to strengthen the segregation of wet waste at source and ensure its regular transportation to the biogas plant. He specifically called for a continuous supply of wet waste from hotels, markets, function halls, commercial establishments and other bulk waste generators so that the facility can operate effectively.

The waste collected through this system can be processed to produce biogas, electricity and organic manure, supporting efforts to reduce the environmental impact of solid waste. The Minister also asked officials to address operational issues and improve coordination between the departments involved so that the plants can function at their designated capacity.

The Minister further directed authorities to take strict measures against the dumping of construction and demolition waste along roadsides, in drains and at vacant sites. A comprehensive system has been proposed to collect such waste and transport it to the C&D processing plant for scientific processing and recycling.

MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar directed officials to make greater use of products manufactured from processed C&D waste, including paper blocks, building blocks and bricks, in GVMC engineering and development works. Reusing these materials is expected to reduce dependence on natural resources and improve the utilisation of construction waste.

 

The visit comes as Visakhapatnam continues to strengthen its solid-waste management infrastructure at Kapuluppada. Recent plans for the area also include waste-processing and waste-to-energy facilities, with authorities focusing on reducing the amount of waste sent directly for disposal.
