Media Icon Ramoji Rao Passes Away at 87



Ramoji Rao, the influential founder of the Ramoji Group and the man behind the renowned Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, passed away at the age of 87. The media mogul, who led the Telugu news and entertainment network ETV, died while receiving medical treatment on Saturday morning in Hyderabad.

Rao had been admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, June 5, after experiencing high blood pressure and breathlessness. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his condition.

Rao's legacy includes the establishment of the Ramoji Group, which owns the integrated production facility in Telangana's capital, Hyderabad. His contributions to the Telugu media landscape and the broader field of journalism have been widely acknowledged and celebrated.


Following the announcement of his death, several prominent leaders expressed their condolences. Senior BJP leader G Kishan Reddy conveyed his sorrow, stating, "Saddened by the passing of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu. His remarkable contributions to Telugu media and journalism are commendable. My deepest condolences to his family members," he posted on X.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief and Andhra Pradesh CM-designate Chandrababu Naidu also paid tribute to Rao. In a heartfelt post on X, Naidu reflected on his long association with the media stalwart. "His death is a great loss not only for the Telugu people but for the country as well. He was a pinnacle in the field of media. I was associated with Sri Ramoji Rao for four decades. His way of saying good is good and bad is bad brought me closer to him," he wrote.

Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, who is set to take oath for the third time on Sunday, acknowledged Rao's visionary contributions to the media industry. "The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world. Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development," Modi said.

Rao's passing marks the end of an era for the Telugu media and film industry, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the field of journalism.
