INDIAN NAVY BIDS FAREWELL TO UH-3H HELICOPTER
The Indian Navy bid a poignant farewell to the iconic UH-3H helicopter after 17 years of exceptional service during a de-induction ceremony held at INS Dega, Visakhapatnam, on 28th June 2024. The ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, and was attended by veteran officers, sailors of the UH-3H squadron, and their families. The event celebrated the helicopter’s remarkable contributions while also marking the beginning of a new chapter with the introduction of the Sea King 42C helicopter at INAS 350.
The UH-3H helicopter, known for its versatility and reliability, was an integral part of Indian Naval Aviation. Its de-induction marks the end of a glorious era, leaving behind a legacy of operational excellence in Special Operations and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. Commissioned into INAS 350, the ‘Saaras’ squadron, on 24th March 2009 at INS Dega, the UH-3H helicopter brought innovative capabilities that enhanced maritime security and operational effectiveness.
Originally brought to India in 2007 along with INS Jalashwa, the UH-3H helicopter played a crucial role in various missions, including Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), offshore installation security, and special operations. Its advanced SAR capabilities made it a lifeline during natural disasters, providing critical logistical support and saving countless lives.
The ‘Saaras’ squadron crest, with its motto "Strength, Valour, and Perseverance," symbolizes the dedication and resilience displayed by the UH-3H helicopter throughout its service. From ensuring the security of maritime boundaries to offering relief in times of crisis, the helicopter upheld its commitment with unwavering diligence.
As the UH-3H retires, its legacy will continue to inspire. One helicopter will be permanently displayed at a prominent location in Visakhapatnam, the ‘City of Destiny,’ as a tribute to its service and a beacon for future generations. During the ceremony, Vice Admiral Saxena handed over a commemorative plaque to the State Government, received by Shri K. Mayur Ashok, IAS, Joint Collector, Visakhapatnam, symbolizing the transfer of the aircraft.
The induction of the Sea King 42C helicopter ensures that INAS 350 will carry forward the operational power and capability established by its predecessor, promising a future as dynamic and resilient as its past. The de-induction of the UH-3H helicopter stands as a testament to the Indian Navy’s commitment to evolving with the changing maritime landscape while honoring its storied history.
