Raman effect is still visible in Visakhapatnam.

Nobel laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman got the idea of his theory, the Raman Effect or Raman Scattering in our very own Visakhapatnam.

The theory on  Molecular Diffraction of Light, was initially derived at the Mrs AVN College, One Town, Visakhapatnam.

CV Raman spent his early years in Visakhapatnam, he pursued his pre-university education at Mrs AVN College. In his biography, he quoted that from his sea-facing classroom, which was located on the first floor of the gothic-styled stone building, he observed the changing colours of the Bay of Bengal Ocean in Visakhapatnam and that it used to fascinate him.

According to the college records, Raman studied high school from 1902 to 1905, and Pre University Course (PUC) from 1905 to 1907 in this in this institution. His father Chandra Sekhara Iyer was a teacher at Mrs AVN College High School.

The physics lab in the college, where Dr Raman conducted his first experiments, is safely kept as it is,  as a sign of respect for the late scientist.

The Andhra University College of Science and Technology is closely associated with Dr CV Raman. He laid the research foundation in the area of Physics, and served as an honorary professor for the Department of Physics. Andhra University awarded this great scientist with a honorary doctorate during the second convocation, which was held on 15 November,1928.

Our country observes 28 February, every year as the National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect. This experiment is about the change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules. CV Raman published his observation on the effect in 1928.
