Rediscovering the Telugu Tribe of Sri Lanka

In the vast tapestry of the Telugu diaspora, a unique thread has been found in the island nation of Sri Lanka.

While Telugu communities are scattered worldwide, the revelation of an indigenous Telugu-speaking tribe residing in Sri Lanka for centuries has sparked the interest of researchers.

Vizai Bhaskar, CEO of the Andhra Pradesh Creativity and Cultural Commission (APCCC), announced plans for a team of anthropologists and linguists to journey to Sri Lanka to delve deeper into the history and culture of this enigmatic tribe.

Known as the Ahikuntaka, they have inhabited the island for generations, distinct from Indian migrants who form the broader Telugu diaspora.

Bhaskar revealed that the Ahikuntaka population is dwindling, with only a few hundred members remaining. Unlike many other Telugu communities,

They are indigenous to Sri Lanka and are believed to have roots predating even the Tamil presence on the island.

Historical accounts suggest that the Ahikuntaka were once snake-charmers who faced social ostracization.

Their story intertwines with that of Sri Lanka itself, with Bhaskar noting that the last king of Sri Lanka before British colonization had Telugu origins.

The APCCC and the Cultural Centre for Vijayawada and Amaravathi (CCVA) are spearheading the initiative to document the history and heritage of the Telugu presence in Sri Lanka.

Bhaskar emphasized the importance of preserving this legacy, citing the responsibility of Andhra Pradesh, as a Telugu-speaking state, to honor its cultural heritage.

Furthermore, Bhaskar highlighted the contributions of Telugu individuals like "Burma Naidu," who played a significant role in the development of Burma (now Myanmar) and promoted Telugu language and culture.

The Commission and CCVA plan to honor Naidu for his contributions, recognizing his efforts to preserve and propagate Telugu identity.

The Ahikuntaka, once nomadic, have established their own institutions for dispute resolution, embodying a rich cultural tapestry that awaits further exploration and understanding.
