Resilience and Resolve: Landslide cleared for Seamless Train Operations on KK line

In an impressive display of dedication and teamwork, railway authorities successfully cleared a massive landslip that had disrupted train operations in the Manabar-Jarati region of Odisha due to incessant rains.

The landslide, which occurred on September 24, had blocked the railway track, causing significant disruptions.

A team of senior officials from Waltair Division, led by Divisional Railway Manager Saurabh Prasad, worked tirelessly to restore normalcy. They deployed heavy-duty machinery, engaged a large workforce, and took on the daunting task of clearing approximately 10,000 cubic meters of mud, rocks, and fallen trees from the track.

Despite challenging weather conditions and intermittent rains, more than 25 excavators and over 450 workers were mobilized to expedite the clearance process. Additionally, an accident relief train from Koraput, material relief trains, and OHE cars were actively involved in the restoration efforts.

The construction team, under the leadership of S Srinivas, Chief Administrative Officer, Construction, along with two Chief Engineers and other officials, camped at the site for 17 days. They oversaw the use of heavy machinery to remove earth, soil, and boulders.

To ensure the safety and effectiveness of the operation, consultants from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow and expert faculty from the Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering in Pune were deployed to the site.

Moreover, Waltair Division set up a communication control center, provided power supply arrangements, lighting for 24/7 operations, and catered to the needs of the workforce by offering drinking water and catering facilities.

General Manager of East Coast Railway (ECoR), Manoj Sharma, and senior ECoR officials inspected the site multiple times, offering unwavering support for the swift completion of the restoration process.

As a result of the determined efforts, 12 loaded Goods trains that were stranded in the Jagdalpur-Kirandul area were dispatched to their respective consignees, including Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Gangavaram Port, Jindal Steel, Arcelor Mittal, and Wellspun.

Additionally, Waltair Division facilitated the movement of six empty rakes to Bacheli and Kirandul for loading by the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC).

The Divisional Railway Manager commended the officials for their relentless dedication in clearing the landslide at Manabar-Jarati and restoring traffic in the Koraput-Kirandul section.

This remarkable feat is a testament to the resilience and commitment of the railway authorities and their unwavering efforts to ensure the smooth flow of train operations in the region.
