Vizag City Police's Ingenious Plan: Turning Drunk Driving Penalties into Acts of Civic Responsibility
In a unique and innovative approach to tackling the issue of drunk driving, the Visakhapatnam (Vizag) city police have taken a remarkable step towards making the streets safer and more beautiful. Their mission? To reduce road accidents by at least 20% this year and instill a sense of civic responsibility among those caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Recent developments have been nothing short of impressive. Over 150 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence at various locations within the city. The courts didn't take this lightly and slapped an impressive fine of 4.85 lakh rupees on these tipsy drivers. This stern action was a part of the police's commitment to making Vizag's roads safer.
The statistics speak for themselves. Vizag district reported 767 road accidents from January to August in 2023, compared to 996 accidents during the same period in 2022. Even more striking is the decrease in the number of fatalities, with only 147 reported in 2023 as compared to 303 in 2022, from January to June.
Senior police officers reveal an interesting trend, with nearly 60% of drunk driving cases occurring on the city's outskirts. To address this, they've intensified checks to prevent open-air alcohol consumption and increased surprise checkpoints at strategic locations in these areas.
The police's efforts don't end with penalties and fines, as they're introducing a novel approach to reforming the offenders. In 2023, the city police registered more than 10,000 drunk driving cases until September. Some motorists were sentenced to short imprisonments of two to three days, while over 70 drunk drivers were assigned to clean the beaches as a form of punishment.
On average, the city police are registering 40 to 60 drunk driving cases daily. Driving under the influence not only endangers lives but also imposes a heavy burden on the families of the offenders and other commuters. To keep the violators on their toes, the police are changing the locations of their surprise checkpoints, ensuring that no one escapes their watchful eyes.
In 2022, the Vizag city police booked over 8,800 cases for tipsy driving. Of these, 183 motorists were sent to jail for one day to one week, while more than 1,400 were asked to campaign against drunk driving at important junctions for three days.
With these inventive initiatives, it's clear that Vizag city police are not only enforcing the law but also nurturing a sense of civic responsibility among the community. Drunk drivers may soon find themselves picking up litter on roadsides or beaches, contributing to the cleanliness and safety of the city. It's a bold move that goes beyond punitive measures, making our streets safer and more beautiful, one offender at a time.
