Rising Temperatures and Election Season Push Chicken Prices Higher in Visakhapatnam
In Visakhapatnam, the common man is feeling the pinch as chicken prices soar amidst rising temperatures and election-related demand.
Chicken prices, which began climbing in May, are expected to remain high until June. According to local traders, the situation may not stabilize for another two to three weeks.
The summer months typically see an increase in chicken prices due to several factors: poor growth rates, increased mortality among chickens, and a subsequent decline in meat consumption. To address these challenges, farmers often reduce production during this period.
This year, the election season has further exacerbated the price hike. Candidates have been providing meals, often including chicken curry or biryani, to party cadres and workers almost daily for the past two months.
This increased demand has significantly contributed to the surge in chicken prices.
Even though the temperatures have moderated slightly recently, the high demand during the election season has kept chicken prices elevated. The cost of a kilo of chicken, which was Rs 220 in the first week of May, has shot up to Rs 300 within 20 days.
Kotyada Srinu, President of the Broiler Association of Greater Vizag, noted that the increase in feed and chick prices also contributes to the production slowdown during summer.
Normally, it takes 40 days for chicks to be ready for sale. However, in summer, it takes an additional five to 10 days for them to mature.
Unlike mutton and fish, whose prices are relatively stable, chicken prices fluctuate due to various factors, leading to losses for farmers," he explained.
With a new batch of chickens expected to be ready for sale by the first week of June, traders anticipate a drop in prices, offering some relief to consumers.
