A dedicated water-supply project has been proposed to meet the requirements of upcoming data centres in the Visakhapatnam region.

The proposed data centres across Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Vizianagaram districts are expected to require around 110 MLD of water in the first phase, while the overall proposed data-centre capacity is about 5 GW.

The project is estimated to cost ₹1,150 crore and would create a dedicated water-supply network for the data-centre clusters.

Under the proposal, water would be drawn from the Polavaram Irrigation Project Left Main Canal between July and October and stored in the Yeleru reservoir through the Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme.

From November to June, the stored water would be supplied through the Yeleru system and Yeleru Main Canal.

The proposed network would extend to data-centre locations around Visakhapatnam, Bhogapuram and Polupalli in Vizianagaram district, and Makavarapalem and Rambilli in Anakapalli district.

Around 200 km of pressure mains of different diameters are proposed as part of the network.

The Yeleru Main Canal would also need to be restored to its designed capacity of 380 cusecs by March 2028, compared with its present carrying capacity of about 200 cusecs. A further expansion to 637 cusecs is proposed by 2030.

 

The project is part of the broader effort to address Vizag’s growing water requirements as the region develops into a major data-centre and technology hub.
