The Vice President of the Greater Visakha Citizens’ Forum Sohan Hatangadi, on Friday earnestly urged the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) on Friday to take action in safeguarding the 13.8-acre parcel of land, commonly known as the LuLu land, located adjacent to the Visakhapatnam Port guest house along the beach road.
Mr. Sohan emphasized that the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is currently considering the sale of 13.8 acres of valuable land for ₹1,400 crore. This decision demands our collective attention and action.
Underscoring the need for protecting the public land for the good cause, Sohan Hatangadi said the vicinity around the renowned RK Beach is currently densely inhabited, owing to the substantial number of visitors it attracts. Utilizing this land for various commercial and residential ventures would worsen the situation, exceeding the area's sustainable capacity.
He also reiterated that this scenario would result in heightened energy consumption, strain on sewage systems, amplified traffic congestion, and increased pollution levels. Such developments would tarnish the appeal and attractiveness of Beach Road and have lasting repercussions on the ability of the general public to relish the splendor of Vizag.
Now, more than ever, Vizag requires green zones—areas adorned with trees, gardens, parks, and abundant open space. There is a strong desire for recreational areas that foster community engagement and offer secure retreats for our children and elderly citizens, he emphasized, Sohan added.
"We strongly maintain the conviction that this land must remain in perpetuity under the ownership of Vizag's residents. It should function as a haven where magnificent trees thrive and the natural environment thrives said Mr. Sohan and urged VMRDA to reevaluate its decision to sell this land, emphasizing that it represents the legacy of Vizag's people and should not be exchanged for immediate financial gain, considering it as a cherished family heirloom."
It's worth noting that the land was initially assigned to the LuLu Group during the TDP government's tenure prior to 2018. This is why it has become known as 'LuLu Land.' However, the YSRCP government assumed power in 2019 and revoked the sale to the LuLu group. Subsequently, the VMRDA took possession of the land and is currently in the process of preparing it for sale through an open auction.
