VSP-JAC Advocates for Captive Mines to Prevent Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Privatization

The Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee (VUPPC), a joint action committee (JAC) comprising trade unions and employee associations, has intensified its efforts to secure captive iron ore mines for the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). This initiative aims to enhance the plant's financial stability and counteract privatization plans.

The VUPPC argues that the absence of captive mines has significantly impacted VSP's profitability, as the plant relies on external sources for iron ore, leading to higher production costs. By obtaining dedicated mines, VSP could reduce expenses and improve its competitive edge.

In a recent statement, the Human Rights Forum (HRF) echoed this sentiment, demanding the immediate allocation of captive mines to VSP and the reversal of any privatization decisions. The HRF emphasized that VSP, as the nation's first shore-based integrated steel plant, should remain under public ownership to serve broader societal interests.

Historically, the lack of captive iron ore mines has been a longstanding issue for VSP. Reports indicate that even after three decades of operation, the plant continues to face challenges due to its dependence on external iron ore supplies, affecting its financial performance.

The VUPPC has organized various protests and submitted representations to the Union Government, urging the allocation of captive mines and the cessation of privatization plans. They contend that such measures are crucial for safeguarding the livelihoods of thousands of employees and supporting the regional economy.

The Union Government's response to these demands remains a focal point for stakeholders invested in the future of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
