Visakhapatnam: Tomato prices have surged significantly in Visakhapatnam and other parts of the state, with quality tomatoes now retailing between ₹80 and ₹90 per kilogram.

Traders predict that prices might reach ₹100 per kilogram in the coming days.

This sharp increase is attributed to a reduction in the area designated for tomato cultivation and the impact of unseasonal and erratic rainfall in Karnataka and Rayalaseema.

Earlier this year, in April, tomatoes were sold for ₹150 to ₹200 per 15-kilogram crate (approximately ₹14 per kilogram) in wholesale markets across Vizag, Vijayawada, and other regions.

However, recent months have seen an unprecedented price surge, with a 15-kilogram crate now fetching ₹1,100 to ₹1,200 (around ₹75 per kilogram) in wholesale markets.

In July 2023, tomato prices reached a peak of ₹200 per kilogram, marking one of the highest price surges in recent history. Given the current trend, consumers might continue to face high tomato prices in the near future.
