Visakhapatnam: Embracing Plasma Processes for Cost-Effective Solutions

Visakhapatnam: Plasma processes are emerging as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative for treating wastewater, pharmaceutical residues, and industrial chemicals, according to Assistant Professor K. Rama Mohan Rao from the GITAM Chemistry Department.

During a scientific talk at the School of Science campus on Tuesday, Prof.

Rama Mohan Rao highlighted that plasma, an ionized gas and the fourth state of matter, is pivotal not only in everyday applications but also in scientific and industrial advancements.

He pointed out that plasmas make up over 99 percent of the visible universe, underscoring their vast significance.

In industrial and technological settings, plasmas are indispensable," Prof. Rama Mohan Rao explained.

They are vital in the deposition of protective coatings on aircraft engine components, industrial parts, the fabrication of microprocessors, and in the conversion of waste into energy and water treatment.

He added that researchers are increasingly finding applications for plasma in medicine, agriculture, and the energy sector.

Plasma-based processes are crucial for advancing sustainable resource utilization and the electrification of the economy.

The head of the Chemistry Department at the School of Science, NVS Venugopal, encouraged researchers to further explore the potential of plasma processing, emphasizing its power and versatility in various applications.
