The district recorded 92.39 mm of rainfall against a normal 177.3 mm as of August 26.
This represented a rainfall deficit of 47.89% during the period monitored by the Ground Water and Water Audit Department.
Excessive borewell extraction for domestic, agricultural and industrial use is adding to the pressure.
Urbanisation and concrete surfaces have also reduced natural groundwater recharge.
Experts have warned about the possibility of seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers.
Meanwhile, authorities are working to strengthen the city’s water security through additional storage and improved supply systems.
The Yeleru system, which supplies a major share of the city’s water, is being strengthened through canal desilting and additional storage plans.
