Visakhapatnam Police Launches 'Partners in Policing' Program to Enhance Response and Address Staff Shortage
In response to the pressing issue of acute staff shortages and the need for improved response times, the Visakhapatnam Police Department is rolling out a groundbreaking initiative called the 'Partners in Policing' program.
Police Commissioner A. Ravi Shankar has unveiled plans to integrate data from mobile phones belonging to various stakeholders into the central server of the police, facilitating real-time tracking and coordination in case of emergencies.
Across Andhra Pradesh, the Police Department is grappling with a significant shortage of personnel, amounting to approximately 33% across all ranks and districts.
Compounding this challenge is the constant deployment of officers for security duties at political events and religious gatherings.
Recognizing the need for innovative solutions, the city police in Visakhapatnam is pioneering a new approach to enhance visibility and response capabilities.
With a total police force of around 3,600 in Visakhapatnam, meeting the demands of round-the-clock policing across 22 police stations has proven to be a daunting task.
To address this, Commissioner A. Ravi Shankar has introduced the 'Partners in Policing' concept, which involves collaborating with various agencies to augment policing efforts.
As part of this initiative, all police personnel have been equipped with GPS-enabled SIM cards, enabling real-time tracking of their whereabouts.
Additionally, over 1,200 Abhayam auto-rickshaw drivers and thousands of Uber, Ola, Rapido, and APSRTC bus drivers have been provided with GPS-enabled phones, integrating their contact information into the police database.
This integration significantly expands the reach of the police force, from 3,600 to over 12,000, virtually overnight.
In the event of a distress call, the central server will notify all relevant respondents within a one-kilometer radius, including police personnel, auto-rickshaw drivers, and ride-sharing service drivers.
This coordinated response, facilitated by GPS coordinates and real-time alerts, aims to provide swift assistance to those in need and serve as a deterrent to criminals.
Respondents who assist in emergencies will be rewarded with awards, recognition, and in some cases, cash incentives.
Conversely, action will be taken against officers who fail to respond promptly. Commissioner A. Ravi Shankar emphasizes that the integration process is underway and will soon be operational, marking a significant step forward in enhancing public safety and security in Visakhapatnam.
